Every New Year the tradition is to set your resolutions by January 1st and usually by January 3rd you’ve probably broken those resolutions. Why not instead pick a theme for your year? Fellow SteamFeed’er and Co-Founder of List.ly Nick Kellet has started a campaign inspired by Chris Brogan called #MyThreeWords.
The idea is to pick three words that will be your focus for the coming year. Pretty easy, right? Well, that depends on how you define “easy.” Finding three words for some can be pretty daunting and for others – pretty quick. I have always had three words that have I used to define my focus for several years now. They have not failed me yet. Lead, Inspire and Transform. It’s not just three words for me but my personal mantra.
Lead
Leadership has been central theme in my life. Leadership was ingrained in me early on in life by my Father, Bob. He was a volunteer Fireman for over 50 years and his life and leadership inspired me to devote myself to serve others. Leadership begins and ends with us. We lead ourselves first. Our core values are the tenets of our leadership that extend outward to the world. The idea that we are all leaders of ourselves has served me very well in life and business. I’ve been able to keep myself accountability and honest with all. I see leaders as not just titles but individuals. And that mindset leads me to my next word…
Inspire
When we are leading ourselves first, we lead by example and that example inspires others to find their own leader within. Inspiration is found in everyday people and acts. It’s not the grand acts that we remember most, it’s the small acts that touch us. We remember notes, words and personal experiences with individuals – this is what truly inspires us to be our best. The leaders who inspire me aren’t big names, they are people who took the time to be kind, be honest and be a leader of themselves first. This inspirational leadership leads me to my final word….
Transform
We are all connected in some way. Whether through social media or personal connections, it’s a small world and the acts of each of us make ripples that are felt far and wide. When we are kind to one, we are kind to all and that can transform. Transformation happens when we allow ourselves to be changed by actions or words that we receive. Not everything in life will always be positive, sometimes we are changed by negatives too – but even in those moments – the transformation can be life changing and open the door to a better path. It’s all in how we see it.
Lead, Inspire and Transform…#MyThreeWords. What are yours?
I’ve also embedded Nick’s List.ly list in this post if you want to share your words there as well.
May 2014 bring you much success, joy and inspire you to be a leader. Cheers!
